MENDING BROKEN WINGS
Restoring Fatherhood. Renewing Identity. Igniting Revival
Our MISSION
Mending Broken Wings exists to prevent unnecessary family separation, reform child welfare systems, and support individuals and families impacted by trauma and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) through education, advocacy, and community-based care.
We work to ensure children are protected without causing further harm, families are supported rather than punished, and individuals with FASD are identified, understood, and valued not criminalized or discarded by systems that fail to recognize their needs.
Our Vision
A future where children remain safely with their families whenever possible, prenatal alcohol exposure is prevented, individuals with FASD receive lifelong support, and child welfare systems operate with transparency, accountability, and compassion.
Our Core Belief
Child safety, disability justice, and family integrity are not competing values.
When systems prioritize removal over support, children with FASD and trauma histories are disproportionately harmed.
Our Primary Pillars
1️⃣ Doing Child Welfare Right
Preventing Unnecessary Foster Care & Family Separation
Mending Broken Wings promotes evidence-based alternatives to removal that keep children safe without inflicting the trauma of foster care.
We advocate for:
-
Family preservation when safe, not “family preservation at all costs”
-
Addressing poverty-based neglect with concrete support, not punishment
-
Community-led prevention, not surveillance
-
Intensive family preservation services when real risk exists
-
Strong due process and family defense to prevent wrongful removals
-
Oversight and accountability for child welfare agencies and courts
We recognize that:
Many families do not need to be “fixed” they need protection from systems that misunderstand poverty, disability, and trauma.
2️⃣ FASD Prevention, Identification & Lifelong Support
Building Hope Together
Mending Broken Wings is committed to preventing prenatal alcohol exposure and supporting individuals and families impacted by fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) particularly those entangled in foster care, juvenile justice, homelessness, and adult correctional systems.
Our FASD Mission
To prevent prenatal alcohol exposure and support all individuals and families impacted by FASD through education, advocacy, and trauma-informed care.
Our FASD Vision
A world where:
-
Alcohol is not consumed during pregnancy
-
FASD is identified early
-
Individuals with FASD are supported across the lifespan
-
Families are equipped, not blamed
-
Systems respond with understanding instead of punishment
Why FASD Matters in Child Welfare Reform
Children with FASD are:
-
Overrepresented in foster care
-
Frequently misdiagnosed or undiagnosed
-
Labeled “behavioral” rather than neurologically disabled
-
More likely to experience placement disruption, criminalization, and homelessness
Without proper identification and support:
-
Families are blamed for symptoms of brain injury
-
Parents lose children due to misunderstood behaviors
-
Youth age out of care without tools, structure, or support
FASD-informed care is not optional it is essential.
3️⃣ Education, Training & Systems Change
Equipping Communities & Professionals
Like Proof Alliance, we believe lasting change happens at both the individual and systems level.
We provide and advocate for:
-
FASD-informed training for:
-
Child welfare workers
-
Foster & kinship caregivers
-
Educators
-
Churches and community leaders
-
Legal and justice professionals
-
-
Trauma-informed, disability-aware family coaching
-
Faith- and community-based education initiatives
-
Collaboration with national and regional FASD organizations
By equipping professionals and communities, we reduce:
-
Unnecessary removals
-
Placement instability
-
Criminalization of disability
-
Long-term system costs
Our Impact Philosophy
While Mending Broken Wings is growing, our model is grounded in proven outcomes:
-
Prevention costs far less than foster care or incarceration
-
Early identification of FASD improves lifelong outcomes
-
Family preservation reduces trauma and public expense
-
Every dollar invested in prevention and education multiplies in social return
We believe investments in FASD prevention and family preservation deliver exponential human and economic impact, strengthening families and communities for generations.
Our Promise
“Mending Broken Wings gave us hope when the system offered none. They helped us understand the brain, not just the behavior and reminded us we weren’t alone.”
— Caregiver
“For the first time, someone saw my disability instead of my mistakes.”
— Self-Advocate
How We Work Together
Mending Broken Wings does not replace organizations like Proof Alliance we stand alongside them.
We focus on:
-
Child welfare reform + FASD integration
-
Faith and community engagement
-
Policy accountability
-
Advocacy for families harmed by system failures
Together, we are building a future where children are protected, families are preserved when safe, and individuals with FASD are supported—not punished.
